There are actually two primary features of solfege:

  1. Fixed Do, through which every single syllable matches a note-name. This is comparable to the Romantic program naming pitch after the solfege syllables, and can be used in Romantic and Slavic nations, among others.
  2. Movable Do, or Solfa through which every single syllable matches a degree of the scale. This is comparable to the Guidonian practice of providing every degree of the hexachord a solfege name and is usually used in Anglo-Saxon and Germanic nations.
